Transformation of KIRDI into a Competitive and Reputable Research Organization

The role of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) is recognized globally as being a critical cog in the wheel of economic growth. It constitutes key components of social integrations and sustainable development. It is the key to poverty reduction and enhancing access to basic needs in developing countries like Kenya.

Kenya Industrial Research & Development Institute (KIRDI) is the National Industrial Research Institute whose mandate is to undertake Industrial Research, Technology and Innovation and disseminate findings that will have a positive impact on national development.

The transformation of KIRDI into a reputable and competitive Research Institution under the Kenya Vision 2030 will be realized through; Deliberate Capacity Building Initiatives, attracting and retaining high calibre professionals, upgrading the quality and re-focusing the Research, Technology and Innovation programmes, modernization of the Institute’s infrastructure in line with the demands and expectations of industry, enhancing Collaboration and Networking, Benchmarking against successful similar institutions, Development of a sustainable Financial Resource Base for the Institute, among others.

It is envisaged that KIRDI will continue to play a critical role in facilitating Technology Transfer to Micro, Small and Medium Industries (MSMIs); Improving Product Designs and Promoting Product Innovations. This will promote rapid growth in the manufacturing sector and give an impetus to the Kenya Vision 2030 Manufacturing Sector goal of attaining a 10% annual growth.

The following specific activities are being undertaken to achieve this transformation:

  • Upgrading the Institute’s equipment and laboratories
  • Developing the state-of-the art research facility at KIRDI South ‘B’ site and KIRDI Western Region Centre Research, Technology and innovation Laboratories
  • Increasing the number of Researchers (with PhDs)


Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) is the National Industrial Research, Technology and Innovation Institution established in 1979 as a multidisciplinary Institution to conduct Research and Development in Industrial and Allied Technologies.
