What is STOVE and AKIBA?
The name AKIBA comes from the Kiswahili word for ‘savings’. The technology used
has the potential to increase household savings in terms of money, time, health and
environment. The stove is designed to use any dry biomass material (including
agricultural waste) as fuel and requires far less fuel than an ordinary household jiko.

COLLABORATION
The STOVE project is an example of international cooperation that brings together a
number of students, researchers and organisations; as well as skills and knowledge.
The prototype AKIBA stove has been designed by Mbeo C. Ogeya and developed
through a project supported by the Aalto University (Finland), SHALIN Finland,
Coalition for Environment and Development (CED) and Kenya Industrial Research and
Development Institute (KIRDI) collaboration amongst others (SACDEP/KEFRI) and
funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland’s development cooperation funds.
STOVE is a research and development project exploring the possibilities for a cost
effective, fuel efficient, and less polluting stove for use in households and institutions.

TECHNOLOGY
As well as other stoves under development in the project, AKIBA applies the widely
used concept of top lit up-draft (TLUD) gasification principal. It incorporates physical
principals that enhance its functionality and gasification and gas combustion efficiency.
AKIBA therefore uses less fuel, produces less smoke, and as an end result, produces
soil enhancing charcoal.
