Technology Transfer, Innovation and Extension Services
Manager: Dr. Moses M. Makayoto

Kenyan enterprises are not competitive because they use outdated and inefficient technologies. In addition, majority of the enterprises (SMEs) do not have access to competitive technologies. Technology transfer to Kenyan enterprises is one of the most effective strategies of enhancing access to competitive technologies.
KIRDI has developed a programme of technology transfer, innovation and extension services as a way of enhancing access to technology by Kenyan enterprises. Through technology transfer activities, KIRDI is working closely with enterprises to enhance uptake of new technologies. Through extension service activities, KIRDI is working closely with the enterprises to support them in product development and diversification, quality improvement, productivity improvement and policy development. The overall objective of this programme is to stimulate innovation and enhance competitiveness of the enterprises.
KIRDI targets to create 100 technology oriented SMEs this financial year and 200 by the year 2009 through its Business Incubation and Common Manufacturing Facilities. Technologies transferred to companies and SMEs will be increased from 10 in the previous financial year to 20 this year and to 50 by the year 2009. To strengthen Business Incubation services, 5 Common Manufacturing Facilities and business spaces have been set up at KIRDI’s South B and South C Campuses in Nairobi and at the Kisumu Western Regional Center. Six technology businesses are already being incubated in Nairobi. 200 virtual businesses are to be incubated at KIRDI’s Leather Development Center in South C.
