KIRDI WESTERN REGION CENTRE (KWRC) is one of the campuses of Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI).The center is located in Kisumu along Kibos Road opposite BOC gases. The center is curently headed by Mr. John Githaiti.
KWRC opened its doors of operation in July, 1991 as a pilot plant for sorghum processing. The research project was funded by International Development Research Center of Canada(IDRC). IDRC funded the Technology Transfer and dissemination of sorghum and millet processing technologies to target groups in the western region of the country. Among its first products were:
- Supa mtama
- Brown Sorghum Meal
- Composite finger millet flour, White Sorghum Meal
Additional products among them; children`s porridge flour, Family porridge flour, Pure wimbi flour, Food supplements were later produced. It now specializes in a wide range of activities including processing of traditional foods such as millet, cassava, sweet potatoes and banana.
The center is also offering research and development services, laboratory services as well as energy and fish leather processing technology.
