Commercial and Service Centers
The Institute has five Commercial and Service Centres that provide support to both its core programmes and to industry. The client base of these centres is mainly comprised of micro, small and medium size industries.
The five centers are:-
1. Engineering Development and Service Centre (EDSC)
The Centre provides technical services in engineering design and prototype development, as well as training to the manufacturing industry.
2. Leather Development Centre (LDC)
This comprises a pilot tannery with an efficient effluent treatment plant and a leather goods design unit. Its main service to the leather industry include contract work in leather processing and product development. In addition, the Centre offers training on product and process development to both local and regional leather industries.
3. National Industrial Information Centre (NIIC)
This Centre is the Industrial and Technological Information Bank for both the Institute’s Research Programmes and local industries. Services offered by the Centre include – Reference services, Document loaning, Extension services (to industry), and E-mail/Internet services.
4. Laboratory Services Centre (LSC)
The Laboratory Services Centre provides analytical and quality control services to industry in Kenya and in the East African sub-region. It carries out the following functions:-
¨ Support to R&D activities by providing analytical and testing services;
¨ Provides analytical and quality control services to private and public sectors; and
¨ Provides training for laboratory staff from industry, universities and colleges.
5. KIRDI Western region centre (KWRC)
This centre specializes in a wide range of traditional foods such as millet, cassava, sweet potatoes and pulse. It also offers research, laboratory and fish processing facilities thereby serving as a focal point for KIRDI western Kenya region.
