KIRDI - KenInvest Strategic Collaboration

Collaborations and Strategic Partnerships

The United Nation Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO) and the Government of India supported the upgrade of the Institute’s infrastructure. Through the Project titled “Strengthening the Technical Service Capabilities of the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) in collaboration with the framework of the Kenya Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange Programme (SPX)”. The objective of the project was to improve the technical expertise of KIRDI to provide improved services to Small & Medium Entreprises (SMEs).

It is through this program that KIRDI and KenInvest have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaborations on the SPX Programme to enhance Sub-Contracting Exchange Programmes.

Through this project KIRDI received three metrology equipment (PRSR200 Surface Roughness Tester, FD510 Ultrasonic Flaw detector and Profile Projector) and two Computer Aided Design software applications (Solid Works Education EDITION 2016 software with 3D Design, Simulation documentation engineering, analysis software and Autodesk/ Inventor) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (MasterCAM) software.

Under the project, training for five trainers from KIRDI were trained machine tool design, CNC machines, usages of CAD/CAM, metrology, tooling etc. These trainers in turn trained 13 other staff members of KIRDI as well 9 technical staff from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector in Kenya under the supervision and mentorship of Mr. Paramjeet Sign, UNIDO Expert from India.

Both the training and the equipment have presented KIRDI with the opportunities to strengthen capacities and skill development that will help in meeting the product quality standards. It is anticipated that the technical knowledge transfer for design, manufacturing and final product-finish phases with appropriate quality control and assurance activities at relevant stages will also be facilitated. Thus, the competitiveness of SMEs will be enhanced through the adoption of good manufacturing practices and improved productivity.

This initiative by United Nation and Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government India, has enabled Kenya industrial research and Development Institute (KIRDI) to initiate the process of putting into operation a Computer-aided Design & Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Centre that is intended to foster and support SME in the development of high value-added services and to streamline product innovation processes in Kenya thus contributing to the following United Nations - Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• Goal 8 – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
• Goal 9 – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; and
• Goal 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and productive patterns

The foundation that has been laid by UNIDO and Government of India fits well with the ongoing program of transforming of KIRDI into a reputable, state of the art and competitive research institution through deliberate capacity building initiatives, attracting and retaining high calibre professionals, upgrading quality of Research, Technology and Innovation programmes and activities and modernization of the institute’s infrastructure in line with the demands and expectations of the manufacturing industry as a Vision 2030 flagship project.
In the next phase, KIRDI plans to build on this good work by strengthening the Centre through acquisition of (i) Rapid prototype or 3D printing machine (ii) Reverse engineering (3D data capturing machine) (iii) CNC machining Centers including lathes, mills, routers and grinders (iv) Product testing systems that include: universal, dynamic and fatigue, impact, rheology, thermo- mechanical, automated testing systems and torsion testers.
The institute believes that the project as envisage will put KIRDI on the path to provide:
(1) Enabling environment for local manufacturers (Micro, Small, Medium and Large entrepreneurs) to use the technical expertise of KIRDI to facilitate their engineering and technical works.
(2) An engineering base and technical Centre of excellence, to provide design, development and engineering support to industries on a continuous and sustainable basis.
(3) Technological capability in KIRDI in the areas of manufacturing, quality improvement, productivity enhancement, application of national and international standards as regular practice.
In the short term the Centre will introduce training programmes in the main priority areas of industrial interventions required in Kenya for technicians, trainers, entrepreneurs and engineers.
